Why undersized gutters fail in a Midwest downpour
A gutter is a drainage calculation, not a trim detail. What it has to carry is the roof area above it multiplied by the heaviest rainfall rate that area gets, and a July storm off the prairie delivers a rate that a system sized for gentle drizzle simply cannot take.
When it overflows, it does not overflow evenly. Water sheets over the front lip in the middle of the longest run and lands in a line along the foundation — which is why one particular stretch of a flower bed washes out every summer while the rest is fine. The fix is rarely more gutter; it is a bigger profile, more downspouts, or both.
- Roof area feeding the run — a long slope draining into one short gutter is the classic overflow, and it is common over a garage or an entryway.
- Pitch of that roof — a steep slope throws water outward and fast, so it needs the gutter positioned to catch it rather than to look tidy from the kerb.
- Profile size — five-inch is the default and it is not always enough. Six-inch carries substantially more, and on the wrong house the difference is the whole problem.
- Number and placement of downspouts — the usual real answer. Adding an outlet halves the distance water has to travel along the trough before it can leave.
- Valleys discharging into a gutter — two slopes concentrating into one point puts a firehose on eight inches of trough, and it needs a splash guard rather than hope.
Seamless, and hung properly
We roll seamless aluminium on site, so a run has a joint only where it turns a corner or meets an end cap. Sectional gutter bought in lengths has a seam every few feet, and every seam is a future drip — sealant at a joint that expands and contracts through an Indiana year is on a clock from the day it goes up.
How it is hung matters as much as what it is made of. Hidden hangers screwed into the fascia hold far better than the old spike-and-ferrule, which works loose as the wood moves and leaves the gutter sagging in the middle of the run. Spacing tightens up where snow and ice will load the trough, which around here means the north side and anywhere below a long slope.
Pitch is set with a line, not by eye — a shallow, consistent fall toward each outlet. Too little and it holds water and grows sediment; too much and it looks wrong from the street and still does not drain better.
Where the fascia behind an old gutter has gone soft — and after years of overflow it often has — that board gets replaced before anything is hung on it. Screwing new gutter to rotten wood is a job you do twice, so we would rather find it now and tell you.
Where the water goes after the downspout
This is the part almost everybody skips, and it is the part that matters most to the building.
A downspout that discharges at the base of the wall puts every gallon off that section of roof into the soil directly against your foundation. In a clay-heavy soil that does not drain quickly, that water sits, and in winter it freezes and expands there. Wet basements, efflorescence on block, and the settling that shows up as a crack over a doorway all start here far more often than they start with a failed foundation.
Getting it away from the house is unglamorous, and it costs very little set against what it prevents: extensions that carry the discharge clear of the backfill, a splash block on ground that has enough fall, or a buried line out to daylight where the yard allows it. What does not work is a downspout emptying onto a paved surface that slopes back toward the house, which is more common than it should be.
It costs less to put right than any other part of the system and it is the part most often left as the builder set it, so it is the first thing Crown Point Roofing Company walks when somebody rings about a wet basement wall and a gutter they suspect. Quite often the gutter is innocent and the extension is four feet short.
Guards, ice, and what they will and will not do
Gutter guards get sold hard and they are neither a scam nor a solution. What they are is a trade-off, and the honest version is:
What a guard does well
Keeps leaves and roof grit out of the trough, which on a house under mature maples or oaks is the difference between clearing gutters twice a year and not at all. On a two-storey house that is a real safety benefit.
What a guard does not do
It does not stop ice. Nothing fitted to a gutter does, because ice dams form on the roof above it — a guard can freeze over and then shed water over the front like a ski jump, and a poor one makes winter worse rather than better.
The maintenance nobody mentions
Fine debris still gets through most designs and settles as sludge, and shingle grit builds up on top of a screen. A guarded gutter is a low-maintenance gutter, not a no-maintenance one.
How to judge one
By how it is fixed, not by the brochure. Anything that slides under the first shingle course has lifted your roof edge to install itself, and that is a decision about your roof being made by a gutter salesman.
What 30 pounds a square foot means at the gutter line
The design snow load for Lake County is 30 pounds per square foot. That figure comes from the county table in the Indiana Residential Code and it is set half again as high here as it is for much of central Indiana. It describes what the roof structure is designed to carry — but the number worth thinking about at the gutter is what happens to all that snow on the way down.
Snow that melts and refreezes at the eaves does not politely fill the trough. It grows as a mass anchored partly to the roof edge and partly to the gutter, and water weighs about eight pounds a gallon whether it is liquid or solid. A run of gutter carrying a solid core of ice for a fortnight in January is under a load nothing about its brochure was describing, and it is pulling downwards and outwards on a screw driven into a fascia board that has been damp since November.
Which is why hanger spacing is not a detail we treat as optional, and why we tighten it on the slopes that hold snow longest rather than using one spacing everywhere. It is also why a sagging gutter in spring is usually a winter injury being noticed late, and why re-hanging it on the same holes in the same soft board is a job somebody will be doing again.
The honest limit of all this: a properly hung gutter survives a Lake County winter better than a badly hung one, and neither of them stops an ice dam. That is the next section.
Ice in the gutters is a symptom, not the disease
Every winter somebody rings about a wall of ice hanging off the front of the house and asks whether the gutters are the problem. Almost always they are not.
The ice is meltwater that came down off the roof, reached the cold overhang and froze. The gutter is simply where it stopped. Replacing it with a bigger one, or heating it, changes where the ice sits without changing why there is meltwater running down a roof in January — which is heat escaping from the house into the attic.
So we will hang you a proper gutter, and if what you actually have is an ice-dam problem we will say that instead of taking the job and letting you find out next winter. The work that fixes it is air sealing, insulation to the eaves and balanced ventilation, plus an ice barrier membrane at the eaves whenever the roof comes off. What we will not do is get up on an iced roof with a hammer, or fit anything that has to be plugged in to keep your house dry.
Frequently asked questions
Should I replace the gutters when the roof is done?
It is the sensible moment if they are near the end anyway, because the drip edge, the fascia and the gutter all meet at the same edge and it is the one time all three are accessible. If your gutters are sound, keep them — we will take them down and re-hang them rather than sell you new ones.
Five inch or six inch?
Six inch on long runs, steep slopes, houses with large roof areas draining to few outlets, and anywhere that currently overflows. Five inch is fine on the majority of houses here. It is decided by the roof above the run rather than by preference.
What colour options are there?
Aluminium coil comes in a wide range and it is worth taking two minutes over. Matching the trim usually looks better than matching the roof, and on a house with dark fascia a white gutter draws the eye to exactly the line you would rather nobody looked at.
How often do gutters need clearing?
Twice a year on a house with trees over it — after the leaves come down and again in spring for the seeds and blossom. A house with nothing overhanging it can go longer, though shingle grit still accumulates and the outlets still want checking before winter.
Can you just repair the gutters I have?
Often, yes. Re-hanging a sagging run on new hangers, replacing a rotten fascia board behind it, adding a downspout where the run is too long, or re-sealing an end cap are all worth doing on a system that is otherwise sound.
